Poem Commentary

We are more than this shell, the canvas that identifies our outward form... a truthbound heart will know the person beneath this skin.

Under Dermis

Beauty is worn proud by youthful,

As Wisdom by age is treasured,

A virtuous heart speaks truthful,

Purity in soul flows, pleasured.

Deceit lies secret in plain view.

Discretion’s unpopular skill,

Sees con to innocence rehearsed through,

As prey agrees to be killed.

Smile’s perfection; a stage play,

On skin is beauty, refined.

The birth of vision, dies away,

Leave dregs ‘pon memory dines.

Beneath faux mask, untended,

Begs wild hope, buried, oppressed.

Lost are days, sweet kisses mended,

What death waters, sowing distress.

Grotesque face hides love’s lair, there,

Between the tears from disgrace:

Broken dreams stream sadness, paired.

None belong to one out of place.

...Love’s withheld from an unlovely face.

Thank you for the feedback! And you were so right, I loved it. 'As prey agrees to be killed.' got under my skin. 10!

I knew many people who just cared about their dermis - i tried to stay away from them - while on the Fire Dept. I always told the rookies to get to know poeole on thier own terms - don't judge and listen to what other people had to say

Men speak out of the abundance of their hearts; as a man thinks, he is. I have to re-learn this lesson on a continual basis---grace is good and obedience is a joy to God. Thanks for reading and commenting

Marsink .. What's the saying? . Beauty is only skin deep. I myself tend to believe that Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder and it is found far beneath the skin. I find it sad to think how many can be so shallow .. Great write Pal! :) Ken

Should we say the eyes see the soul, in spite of skin!? It would be well with all if this were true: the broken heart incidents would be cut by 50%. I have been this shallow...Thanks for your good encouragement in word!!

Marsink you have eulogized among others, Isaac Watts, the great English theologian lyricist scorned by a young lady upon a marraige proposal for being too plain for her. Harv

"Words wafting scents upon worth's wind, will tell from whence intent begins." Thanks for that historical footnote, of which I am now aware! And, thanks for your comment!

There is so much wisdom packed into this piece, Marck! And you've given it the perfect title. We're all guilty, from time to time, of judging a book by it's cover. In my experience, I've found that more often than not, the shiny and perfect covers with the bright, attention-grabbing colors are only compensating for a crappy interior story ;) This is such a wonderful write, thanks so much for sharing!

Never judge a book soley by it's cover--Browse Table of Contents and observe the source of reviews. Seriously, a face of rare beauty can be despised for the sewage that flows from that heart. and beautious words and aspriation can be a spring of refreshment, from one whose first impression is unlovely (that's why I wear a bag on my head)... thanks for you kind reception of my perceptions, shared!!!

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
