Edgar Martinez Goes to Cooperstown

Edgar Martinez Goes to Cooperstown

sitting here in our lofty perch
gazing down on that verdant earth
the fans explode in boisterous glee
as Kazu throws strike three

the crowd shifts as the tension climbs
our boys come to bat in inning nine
all is not lost, says skipper Lou
but to win, you must score two

the first batter. Ichiro, hears our pleas
and turns to face the damn Yankees
in a whirl of motion Rivera throws
the orb is struck and skyward goes

silence overcomes us all....
as the ball flies to meet the wall
the bounce is easy, it gives Williams no trouble
but too late, Ichiro has a double

Guillen must now meet his fate
Rivera glares as he turns to the plate
like a machine he lets the ball free
and delivers strike one, Two and THREE

from the dug-out comes Brett, with a smile
Torre knows he could hit it a mile
so, out to the mound he goes for a talk
the decision is made, Boone he will walk

history repeats itself, so they say,
nobody wants it more than Edgar, this day
this wouldn't be the first time he'd send the Yanks home
for it was he who doubled in Griff in the old Kingdome

a trip to the series and extend his career
it was all on the line a season so Dear
He thought of a boy out in the crowd
who's memory of this day, made him so proud

Concentrate, focus, it is time to play
no more thoughts of retirement on this day
Rivera's eyes burn with heat
he delivers strike one, it portends defeat

three more fast balls, the fans howl
Edgar makes contact they all go foul
the delivery, the bat swings, then the snap
Jeter jumps, the ball clears his glove, into the gap

Ichiro and Boone are off like a flash
Ichiro will score, but Boone - he must dash
rounding third, Matsui makes his throw
Posade must wait to see how far it will go.......?

the alarm sounds, I wake from my dreams
 - my sons and I are all there, or so it seems
but the cool morning air whispers is it true?
So my dear boys, how it ends is all up to
You

you have such a way for words the end of this was the best... I got a little lost... but hey sports arn't my thing... But I got the under lieing message of life is what we make it and how we go though it to the end to try to make a difference by God and His love not our own..... red...

Awesome. I love the way you built it up intensely, like a real game and .... then let it down slowly with a calmer conclusion. Good poem sir.
