    War

    This damn war

    Has destroyed my realign

    I can no longer

    Hold stead fast to

    That kind of blind faith

    That faith which

Drove me to pick up arm

    In the first place

     That faith which aloud

    Me to think that

    God favored us over them

I’ve ran the gauntlet of death

And live to talk about it

    I’ve been in this hell

    For far too long

    I’ve played my role

    In this bloody show

    Remember when I thought this,

Cause was more than a show!?!

    Clearing the paths

As I pull the dead out of the way

    Their eyes open wide

    Covered for a blue film

    Staring right through me

    Up to my elbows in

    Rotting flesh and maggoty entrails

    I wanted to save civilization

So much I let it drive me to

    Kill

    And now, now I have

    This raging desire to live

    Without the specter of death

In either case all I can hear

    Is my voice screaming

The failures of this life and past

    Being unable to tell

    Where the blood ends

    And the mud begins

    In every age

    Lords, Gods, Kings, Generals, Presidents

Have promised a war to end all wars

    Once day they might deliver

But so far all we get is

    Death

    Young men and women

    Where the only difference

    Is the flag they salute

    Cutting one another down

Because of the lies and empty promises

    Of their leaders

    Their mothers and fathers

    Grieving and proud

    (As they should)

    Yet their governments

    Give the families

    Empty tokens and empty words

    To convinced them

That it was a necessary sacrifice

    Many who read my words

    Might say I’m anti-soldier

    When in truth is

    Anti- Slaughter

    That’s all this has been

    It’s what all wars are

All war ever will be is

    Preventable slaughter

    No matter who’s right, or

Who’s wrong in the eyes of history

    It’s just slaughter

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
