What Does Love Know About Forever?

All my life I’ve looked around for constant love

I think I had it till momma died

    But I was only three

And what does three know about forever?

All my life I looked for crazy love

I think I had it when Connie fried an egg for me

    But I was only seven

And what does seven know about forever?

All my life I looked for companion love

I think I had it when Carolyn played piano for my song

    But we were only thirteen

And what does thirteen know about forever?

All my life I looked for cuddle love

I think I tasted it on Callie’s French kiss pout

    But we were only sixteen

And what does sixteen know about forever?

All my life I looked for a committed love

I think I had it when Katie said, “I do.”

    But she was only nineteen

And what does nineteen know about forever?

All my life I looked for comprehending love

I think I had it when Chantelle breathed, “Mon chéri, c'est vous

But she didn’t know at twenty six

How much she didn’t know about forever.

All my life I’ve looked for some constraining love

    I’m told that Christ can tell me how to get it;

I’ve missed it six or seven times, at least, by now

How dare I dream about forever?

I wonder if you wrote this after my poem "Love me Forever"? Anyways, forever is a term used when you marry someone-it's supposed to be forever-but essentially it can't be because we don't actually live forever. It's more of a romantic term. And saying that women are irrational...is negative. Many women are more rational than men but when it comes to EMOTIONS anyone can be irrational and that's what love is.......love is not rational!! it only feels.

The aim of this was to allude to two passages from the writings of St.Paul, I Cor. 13, and 2 Cor. 5:14 (KJV word choice). Love is a broad term, and has so many denotative and connotative shadings. Let's add to these; not argue which are the valid ones. Each to his/her own on perceptions of the illogical. I find that men seldom resort to the illogical when they chose to be manipulative. That cannot be said for the women in my narrow life. Women need to win the emotional argument, not the logical one, when a man is involved. I apoligoze for inferring anything negative by this. It's just how it's been for me. The untenable hypothesis always leads to the unwarranted conclusion. HT

Sounds like the rantings of a very lonely individual suffering from a mother complex. Never able to find an individual that measured up their preconceived ideals. In the end the person, does what so many people do, call upon a higher power to solve their problems for them.

In your way, you've delivered me a compliment, albeit intentionaly, ot unintentionally backhanded. Maybe you remember Peggy Lee's famous song, "Is That All There IS?" That sort of triggered the cascade of thoughts you just read.

ahh Harver this poem moves through your ages and enlightens one to realize, "yeah what does one know about forever" or even forever love. I know happily ever to me anyway a fleeting thought. Anyhow I love this poem it seems it could even be made into a play or movie in it's quaint message of human's attempt to discover ever-lasting love ( or anything for that matter). ginga

A wise teacher, recently deceased, once taught me, there are five "P"s to human motivation: Pleasure, Power, Protection, Prestige, and Permanance. Hollywood works overtime plotting the first four; only writers and religious types address the last. Christians hark to the formula that one gets permanance through the triad "spiritual" powers of faith, hope, and love. I chanced a little self-revelation to get others to at least ponder what could be next.

A fascinating chronology of life experiences searching for love culminating in an examination of religious paths to the elusive emotion. Nicely done poem.

Thanks for the early riser visit. Looks like you found it less than one hour old.... Again, thanks for the affirming words. HT

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.
