What Is A Poet

Poem Commentary

I've read so many wonderful pieces here on OP... I am a songwriter first, and true poet after that... More and more have read my pieces here and left many gracious reviews and I thank each and every one of them for their time and their inputs... Since I haven't written a true poem without some kind of musical accompaniment in it's background for a while now, I thought for a change, I would just pen something new; for the heck of it... This is how I felt today... And, where my place in this world of poetry feels... Maybe you can identify with it in some way...

What Is A Poet

D Jackson, 070509

I wonder if I belong here
I’m somewhat out of place
My lyrical mind meanderings
Here amongst such poet’s grace

Inside my head is dancing
With melodies here and there
While crafting stories into form
Hoping to make them clear

But, then I read the others
Who’ve made this place their home
Setting down such majestic words
As brilliant as any may come

My pittances of rhyme with reason
Riding melodically to their ends
Somehow don’t compare at all
To these wordsmith miracles penned

Perhaps I’ve made a bungle
Lit down in a world of sages
Masters of such wordy wonders
Their stories float off pages

Then again, I start to think
Just what's a poet’s goal
But, make a story come to life
In any damned way it’s told

Noone knows if music lies
Within Hell’s fiery pits
But, who could imagine what it’s like
In Heaven’s halls without it

So, I think I’ll hang around
And, be a poet’s reflection
Whittmanize my words to eyes
With music as my direction

I'd say you definitely belong, even moreso than many here who, frankly, do not. We all wonder from time to time if we pass the test or fail..frequently, we do both. I like the lyric better than the title, however. Nice write.

This is a beautifully rhymed creation with so much style and I love the last line, especially for you, the musician. Bravo!

Enjoyed your thoughts on poetic rhyme and reason, but really loved those last two stanzas! I was shouting... Good for you! Otherwise the OP would have a very short and uninteresting menu of poetary option upon which to dine! "10"

Well, thank you ever so kindly Sam... This piece was just a passing brain burp from not too long after I'd joined up here on OP... I've taken down 20 or so piece that were songs and just left the hand full you see now... Glad you enjoyed it...
