what it takes

what it takes

life can be cruel or sweet
depending on the company you keep

head held high
as a symbol of
pride or haughtiness, who can tell
except for the bearer

where is shame or blame
as it flickers constantly
in shadows & whispers
encirling the atmosphere
the distant horizon wobbles
uncertain about future gains or losses

they say we make our own way
but too many victims
of an unforgiving social service system
point the other way
while profits abound
the revolving door swirls round and round
when will it stop?
when expectations soar instead of drop
