Poem Commentary

Written with great love for Grandma Scott - Ruth Letchworth Scott and Grandma Lambert - Jessie Wheeler Lambert

What My Grandmas Never Saw

They never saw me go on a date

They never saw me get my first car

They never saw me get my first job

They never saw me fall in love

They never saw me get engaged

They never saw me get married

They never saw me pregnant

They never saw me become a Mother

They never met any of my children

They never saw me get a Southern Gospel song published

They never saw me go to the Holy Land

They never saw any of my children fall in love

They never saw Danielle give me my first grandchild and make me a "Mimi"

They never saw my divorce from my Children's Dad

They never saw me remarry

They never saw me become a Step-Mom

They never saw me become a Step-Mimi

They never heard my cries over my children

They never saw the HUGE mistakes I made as an adult

They never saw the great JOYS I've had in life

They never saw me have a "crisis of faith"

They never saw me renew my faith

They never saw me talk endlessly about them to my children

They never saw the poems I've written about them

They never saw how important they were and are in my life

Then again....maybe I'm wrong. Maybe they HAVE seen ALL of the above...FROM above. If so, I hope they see this.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
