When You Sleep

When You Sleep

Should I be here?
Lying beside you
Soothed by your steady breathing and
Predictable heartbeat?

When you reach for my body
Is it the one you desire?

Do you waken relieved
That it's my warmth you've clung to all night?

Or

Do you long for another?
The one you love?

Does your subconscious mind
Sleep with her when
It's only me?
Should I be here?

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
