Where All Rivers Lead

Where All Rivers Lead

An angel came into my life
and showed me how to shine
She had a heart of gold,
much too gold for mine
A second angel found me
Taught true love and pain
A storm of  poisoned passion
that left just as it came
A third angel came to heal,
journeyed through my needs
but couldn’t find the starving ones
longing to be freed
A fourth angel blessed me
I saw my calling in her soul
Took up residence there
Alas, my heart grew cold
A fifth angel came
with poetry and lust
She possessed my craving senses,
but that was all it was
A sixth angel landed
With beautiful designs
A champion of love,
sadly not of mine
Finally, the seventh angel came to me
With clipped wings scars
She’d survived the trails of Hell
If only had my heart
I took to a distant land
of the Rising Sun
I found some sanctuary there
Still yet to find the one
The angels could be cruel
but gave me fuel to burn
I’m as alone as I have ever been
But  stronger, older, learned
No longer am I drowning
in such shallow streams
I’m sailing triumphantly, at full mast
where all the rivers lead

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
