Who are we? Who will we become?

Poem Commentary

It is strange we cannot see the difference between freedom and tyranny. Yet we all want freedom.

Who are we? Who will we become?

It might seem to some this land
Was founded on the backs of slaves
But there is more to us than that
And we have certainly changed our ways

We no longer tell you what to do
You must no longer wait to be told
You have developed your own strengths now
You can now stand strong and be bold

But now we have a new leader
Who wants to keep you weak
To receive without your earning
He is not at all what you seek

If it's put into an empty hand
That hand will wait for more
Then you stand like a slave again
Just as you did before

Those who chose to come here
Didn't came for hand outs, you know
It was for new opportunities they came
A new opportunity to grow

But now we all are here
To suck on the Government teat
Not thinking that money is ours
And it's really not much of a treat

The principles that founded our land
Were courage and selfreliance
It was individual determaination
And not some Government compliance

So this message is for all of US
We thought we wanted change
We wanted to get back to our roots
But what we got seems strange

He wants us to be like the others
Like England and France and the rest
To lose our own identity
He thinks that that would be best

Many of us we all know
Came to get away from it all
We must regain our place in the world
Or we're heading straight for a fall

Food for thought, although I am not sure I agree with the premise.................Hampton

Stryx, A no hold barred poem that certainly contains thought provoking rationale that I too have pondered. ginga

The only thing a true leader hands out is inspiration. All others are frauds. - 10 from me

Ha ha you get into politics and the brickbats will come flying (Is that why I see you standing there in your hockey goalie's outfit ha ha). The roots of the welfare state come from the age and culture that perfected the concept of ruthless expedience; think bread and circuses.

I think of work and pay - not pay and no work. Our country is changing and it isn't for the best that is in us. We are getting weaker, not stronger. We are becoming just - 'one of the boys.'

We should back our president----not stab him in the back. Your poem is well thought out, and the rhyming is grand, but I disagree with your stand..............................................................gogant

The privilege of being an American. Let us hope we will be allowed to continue to disagree. But I see freedom of speach in jeopardy.

Well, we have jadedjezzable, poetsofblood, Word, and a few others, who will definitely defend our freedom of speech......so, I don't think we need to worry about it.......................................g
