    WHO ASKED YOU ANYWAY

    "WHO ASKED YOU ANYWAY"

I met this confused young lady
    she had no self esteem
    I could truly empathize
    our addictions' both extreme

I felt the Lord crossed our paths
    that made this friendship rare
    For The Lord had intervened
we found so much to share

We talked from moonlight to sun up
    about our beliefs and fears
We cried we laughed a moment's cure
    defining truly joyful tears

The first day of my detox
I prayed that I might die
    To stop my constant failures
    my request The Lord denied

My second, third, and fourth day
    I asked for death again
    my depression overwhelming
my soul now felt the end

I've cheated death so many times
    I'm lacking strength to pray
Don't do me any favors Lord
    who asked you anyway

The fifth day like the others
    was I friend or foe
God why do you have to pry
    all their words I know

    They're better off without me
    just let me go away
I asked The Lord once again
    who asked you anyway

Oh my child you're so weak
    you cannot help yourself
I heard and felt all others prayers
    crying for your health

I know you child deep within
    I've heard your every prayer
For if two or more unite to pray
    the power's beyond rare

Help your new found friend feel hope
give chance to mend her soul
All their words you say you know
took help from others and years to grow

Remember now you've come so far
    don't let the devil in
Sometimes a step ahead takes two steps back
    Satan wants this win

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
