Winter Came Early

Poem Commentary

Does anyone from the midwest remember the wicked snowstorm on Halloween around 1992? I wrote this the next day,as my children were quite upset that trick-or-treating had to wait for one more year.

Winter Came Early

We lit up our woodstove
First fire of the year
We gathered around it
The flames bright and clear
The cold winds had bared
All the trees in our yard
The winter came early
And caught us off guard
Summer then Winter
What happened to Fall?
First snow in October
Came down at nightfall.

Claire, Seasons come and go, and the weather does not always help us determine the date on the calendar. A simple but thought provoking perfect little poem. ginga

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
