Winter Song

Poem Commentary

I started writing this the day before the winter solstice and finished it the day after Christmas. It inspired me to write one for each of the seasons. Starting with winter and ending in fall.

Winter Song

When golden leaves turn to brown,
and the Earth puts on her winter gown,
the snow reflects with rainbow light,
and the stars all shine so very bright.
When time flies, and the sun dies,
We will not mourn,
For we know it will be again reborn.
A transformation has taken place,
our spirits rise on wings of grace.
As we go, we leave the past behind,
finding perfect freedom and peace of mind.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
