    Wise, Win, Kind

    I feel a deep sadness, a high happiness, a deep happiness --
    until I think,
how I may be winning now -- and so
    recall past, p-r-o-longed pain.
Why am I scoring so late?
But moments of no fear, fun,
    presence, curiosity and play,
with a few good people at their right times,
       were a pink bright opening
       through the doors of fog.
    Wise, wise is inside,
    in yourself,
    be free, be selfish,
    then you can be kind.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
