You Gave Me

You Gave Me

You gave me a gardener who
never has a frown.
You gave me a doctor
who loves his new hospital gown.

You gave me two sons
who will both soon be five.
You gave me many memories
while you were still alive.

You gave me a friendship
that lasted seven short years.
You gave me a warm embrace
that dried up all my tears.

You gave us a country
that thanks you every day.
You gave us a family
that had to watch you walk away.

You gave up so very much
and we still thank you.
You, a brave soldier, husband and father
whose job is finally through.

Wow, this is a hard read, its hard to see the other side of war (the families back home) and the effects on the ones who had to say good bye, it's one thing to lose a brother in Combat, even harder to face his family-what to say, what to tell, all the while fighting tears and trying to stay strong for their sake.

I suppose it could go either way :) Thankfully, he did get to come home in my case. This poem is about my younger brother and his family.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
