Members and staffers were barricaded into the chamber, and police protected them before eventually evacuating the room, but some observers warn the riots — which left four participants and one police officer dead — came dangerously close to imperiling lawmakers.
One of Congress’ most vocal gun advocates is freshman Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), who owns a firearm-themed restaurant in Rifle, Colorado. She drew controversy last week when she vowed in a viral ad to bring her Glock to work. In a statement to Forbes, Boebert promised to follow “all applicable firearm laws and regulations,” but she blasted the decision to place metal detectors outside the House, which she called a “political stunt.”
