But I'm Not Racist

But I’m Not Racist

I am a privileged white women
But I’m not racist
I once told my Cuban girlfriend “I like my women like I like my coffee: Cuban”
But I’m not racist
I swipe left on all black people I see on Tinder
But I’m not racist
I laugh at my father’s racist jokes
But I’m not racist

I am a feminist
I dated a black girl once
I don’t wave Nazi flags
I didn’t vote for Trump
I can’t be racist
…right?

Maybe I don’t use my privilege to help people of color
Maybe I fetishize Hispanic women
Maybe avoid “scary black men”
Maybe I don’t speak out against the racism I see
Maybe I’m a racist

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
