Poem Commentary

This poem was inspired by the George Orwell book of the same name

1984

That impossible year, the one we dreaded is here

When Big-Brother would rule our existence

All part of the plan, though not devised by one man

But at our own very insistence

Thoughts kept inside, our rebelliousness we hide

In a box tucked away in the attic

While our intelligence sinks, to a cruel savage brink

Behind the veil of a loyal fanatic

The ‘Party’ polices our mind; fearing what they’ll find

We bring up the veil in great haste

Only it turns out instead, we are easily read

Thought-crimes written all over our face

It also becomes clear, our children we should fear

They’ve learned the game of war very well

Playing hide-n-go-seek, they really spy-n-go-speak

To Big-Brother, of our traitorous nature they tell

Once Truth was reality, it used to be the Family

But the Party subordinates the truth

For its own power gain, we fight against it in vain

As it corrupts and brainwashes our youth

We should just give in, Big-Brother will certainly win

Surely it can’t hurt all that much

On propaganda we’ll feed, Party literature we’ll read

Our Tele-screens will keep us in touch

If we constantly train, to seal this truth in our brain

And become confident that there is no other

Then the Party will bless loyal subjects who confess:

“I have come to love my Big-Brother”

OMG Antman I just finished reading this novel, and what a powerful read it is! Your certainly give credence to its message. The horrendous torture in the last few pages really made me want to finish Big Brother off. Orwell's literature is to be reckoned with and listened to. ginga
