    A Lesson

Breathe in the warm words that used to heat your skin to a blush

Breathe out the coolness that the empty seat has left.

Open your eyes to the work that ends in till death do us part

Close your eyes to the half truths and screaming words unspoken.

Forget the lightness of his greeting

Remember when he didn't have to say anything.

This is how to live out the purchase of

A few more days before your heart breaks

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
