How could we fall into a love so forbidden?

And think that we could forever keep it hidden.

I sit and ponder how we came to meet,

When the chance for romance was like a trying to cross a busy street.

To my surprise you appeared from my dreams,

The vision in my heart I had always seen.

So I took a shot at what I knew to be forbidden,

And all my desires I tried to keep hidden.

Foolishly I convinced myself that it would be short lived,

But then out of nowhere my heart I’d soon give.

So with each passing day I tried to convince myself I in control,

Only to find that love had without warning redefined its role.

How could I allow myself to fall so hard?

But with you it was so easy to let down my guard.

Now here we are in a game we can’t win,

So do we continue down this path or bring this love to an end.

I would love nothing more than to have you for my own,

To try and build our own happy home.

Then reality seems to creep back into my mind,

Reminding me that we both belong to another at this time.

Should our paths have crossed many years before?

What would have existed for us behind that door?

How could we fall into a love so forbidden?

And think that we could forever keep it hidden.

When we started this love we were so carefree,

That when we were together we knew it should be.

But now as I sit and start to contemplate,

What about this love, should I allow it to escape?

Can we hold on to this sparkle that glistens in our eyes?

This feeling so special that appeared to both our surprise.

It seems to hurt so much to love you like I do,

That I sometimes feel myself trying to pull away from you.

I don’t know what to do; I have never been so confused,

But this you should know, my love you could never lose.

How could we fall into a love so forbidden?

And think that we could forever keep it hidden

I really enjoy this poem it speaks to me about the situation I used to be in.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
