Pet Peeves

My pet peeve about reading some of the poems is spelling errors. Very distracting for me. What are yours? question

Spelling errors, and using slang words. Unless the poem is all slang, it drives me nuts to see things out of place out of the blue. It seems to blow the wind out of a poem.

Re: Pet Peeves

My challenge is reading a piece two or tree times and I still don't get the meaning, or only a small portion of it. (that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the artist, just the beholder) LOL

Re: Pet Peeves

I'd have to say spelling and slang as well.
Or when somebody uses a lot of profanity or vulgarity.

Re: Pet Peeves

I also have trouble reading poetry that is of a more...explicit kind.
I feel bad about not reading some poeples poetry, but it makes me very uncomfotable...
But that is just me, other people seem to have no problems with it.

Re: Pet Peeves

I totally agree with Kt and Marsink. I have no problem with poets writing whatever they feel, just don't ask me to read and comment on something I feel uncomfortable with. If you read what I write, you'd know I'm more family oriented. I'm not going to comment on something explicit. TS big surprise

Re: Pet Peeves

I agree with Bandit1192.My poetry is more family oriented as well and I will not read
any poems that are graphic, vulgar or sexually explicit.Though everyone is free to express thenslves however they choose in poetry,I feel there are certain things a poet shouldn't
put into their poems for others to read.

My biggest pet peeve is with people, who are condescending to others and hold an elitist
view about poetry. They try to make others feel inadequate and less talented, because they
don't have a college degree in poetry or creative writing or because they don't have as much knowledge and experience with poetry. These snobs are one of the main reasons why some
people don't read poetry. They offend people and make others think that all poets behave like this, even though we don't.I hope that more people who normally wouldn't read poetry will visit this website and see that poetry is fun, exciting and that there are poems about almost any subject with varying styles by many very talented poets on this website. cool smile

Re: Pet Peeves

I have only one poem up on this site, but I would like to make this statement. Why are there so many, so called, poets on here that are allowed to put up wacko things ? Surely someone on the staff of Originalpoetry can draw up some guidelines to improve their image. I've tried reading some poetry here, and what do I get...people with anger that spill out onto these pages, unintelligent meanings, words that are terribly misspelled, homophone misuse, words uncapped that should be capped, and other English disregards. And then there are those who seem to get a thrill out of using filthy words as if there is no caring about rules of pornography...doesn't the staff of OP have any standards ?

question question question

Re: Pet Peeves

People the spew all the vile words into their poems may consider what they say art. There is art produced from sadness and anger. What one person may consider art, another may consider pornographic or vile. This site let's us be the judge what is art and what is not.

I was told by someone that poems are like a peep hole into someone's soul. Many people with eratic, vile souls produce eratic, vile poems. They release some of this junk they carry around with them into a poem. I would just move on after reading such a poem. Just like we can't all agree on which music is best. We can't agree on what poems are best.

Even flowers grow in junk yards.

big surprise This is a duel in cliche, so fire away, while it's today, above the fray LOL

Re: Pet Peeves

And the sunrise and alls its glory.
You know the rest of the story.

Yeah, a cliche in the middle of a beautiful poem can ruin it.

Here is another one for me. A repeating rhyming word through out a poem.
They say a stitch and time saves nine.
I'll finish these cliches in my own time.
I drink my bread with my wine.
Oh God give me a sign
How can I finish this very last line?
Everyone knows what's mine is mine.

Sorry to have to post this whine. Hehehe

Re: Pet Peeves

Ah let's see...my pet peeves would be: a poem presented as one long paragraph - I find it difficult to read! Using text words (ur, lol, idk) drives me nuts! I love words and language, so the whole abbreviation thing really gets me. I text in full sentences!! Drives my family crazy...

Misspellings...poor grammar...

I love to read all types of poems...if I get uncomfortable from a poem's subject or graphic nature, I just pass on it.

What I LOVE about poetry: It comes from the soul, heart and mind. Infinite variety! Being able to experience another's view...

Ok, I'm done!

oh oh oh oh

Re: Pet Peeves

I would say my number one pet peeve in poetry is the misuse of proper grammer, especially those of higher grad because I'm trying hard to grasp it! Second would be those RATE RIPPERS that used to fly by smashing good poems into a forever climb to a decent standing! Third I would say is a poor touch in presentation.

I used to feel the way you do here, Slim, but I've found out that lots of the writers here in OP, say........it is the words of the poet, and they can choose whether to misspell words, use vulgarity if they wish, and if we don't like their poem...move onto another's.

gulp

Poetry is what is lost in translation.
