Gift of You

One day the lord came and took my mother
                            Away.
And there you were, you made it known I was not
                            Alone.
I was crying and needed a mothers
                             Arms.
And there you were, with arms open, to keep me
                             Warm.
I was running in circles, didn't know which way to
                              Turn.
And there you were, you held my hand, and lead the
                              Way.
The lord came and took my mother one
                               Day.
Then he came and gave me
                                You.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
