Poem Commentary

I witnessed this scene in Western Texas as a prolonged drought was broken by a long-awaited rainstorm.  The love of God and man's fragile relationship with Nature was exhibited through this experience.

Heaven's Answer

Cloudy skies,
Becoming
Darker and darker...black.

A single drop of rain
Splashing
On an upturned, weathered face.

Then another drop-
Then two, three and more.

Splashes by the hundreds
Falling,
Onto a pair of sunburned arms.

Two hands clasped
Pointing,
Towards a loving God in Heaven.

In his field of crops half-grown,
Kneeling
The planter reverently voices:

"Thank thee, my Father."

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
