Poem Commentary

This is a confessional poem that was an actual homework assignment. My teacher who is a 9/11 survivor told the class a story. He said "you know how your parents teach you that you should leave a room the way you found it?" "well my dad taught me that I should always leave a room a little better than I found it" Thus the analogy was born!

Homework

My teacher stood at the head of the class
with a smirk on his face he put us to task
we all mumbled and grumbled as we heard him ask
he said "over the weekend you shall write a poem"
"this work I assign may take some time so I'm allowing you to take it home"

So at home I sat thinking back on all the facts that I have learned.
The crisis in Darfur in desperate need of a cure
and how we all must be concerned.
I learned the future will become our toughest critic
and how the decisions we make are truly prolific

I live in a city that seems to get smaller
more and more people, the buildings taller
A city consumed by crime, dirt and grime
with this in mind I aspire to climb
the walls that appear to surround it
I think of Mr. Masselli, my teacher by the way
who on any given day you may hear him say
this phrase that leaves me astounded
"the world I contend, with no desire to offend
I shall leave it better than I have found it".

This is really well written. I hope you get a good grade on this. Because you deserve one.

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
