    Inner Rage

I have a rage within me,
    an omnipresent, white hot kernel,
seething, awaiting a little more heat to boil over.

It flavors my life, tinging my soul,
at times clouding and others focusing my judgement.
It is a part of me.

From whence did it come, its genesis?
I was not born with it, it’s not genetic.
    It comes from life lived.

    Man’s inequality, egoism, selfishness
    all helped it form,
    shaped it, nurtured it.

    I am not alone,
we all have it buried deep,
    surfacing and exploding in conflict.

    Sometimes in tragic ways,
    others with positive results;
    but, always important.

    Darren McGavin had it right
    in A Christmas Story.
    Don’t we all relate?

    Do not fear this rage,
    embrace it and use it,
for your own good, and others.

    It gives you strength,
    empowers your actions,
    drives you forward.

    So, take the rage,
    white hot in your hands,
and use it for good change.

    Whether within yourself,
    or others, use its fuel.
    To effect a new reality.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
