    Poem Commentary

Played around with this, after realizing that people aren't really ever satisfied. Found it amusing, that the misguided lover in this poem kept diminishing loving acts as "little" only to realize later, they were the expanseness of the second lover's dreams. Although I seldom herald infidelity, I stretched its seediness to convey the infernal message, "Be grateful!" Acts of kindness should never be taken for granted.

    It Is Enough!

Is this the littleness you claim I always give,
That seems never quite enough on which to live?

The littleness I give when times get tough,
    Diminished always by you...
            Not enough!

    Are the shallow-minded ever
     satisfied?
Are their pretentious fantasies but believed-in lies?

Come, lie with me and frothy-mouthed do swell,
So that afterward, I can believe your lie as well.

    Noting honey-coated, saccharrine-sugared creams,
Littlenesses, the expanseness of my other lover's dreams.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
