Nothing and No One is Free

    It’s liberating really

    Having someone tell us

    That this house that witnessed

    All of the sharp

    And soft edges of us

    Is no longer ours

    Just because

Some man (who we don’t know)

Did something (we don’t know what)

    That was illegal

The only way I can ever be free

Is to have nothing left that matters to me

    It’s so interesting

    Not knowing

    When we will have food

    And when we won’t

    Keeps me on my toes

    And makes everything

    Taste delicious

    Even the air

The only way I can ever be free

Is to have nothing left that matters to me

    It’s almost amusing

    Watching my father

    Veins popping, fists shaking

    Kicking me out

I must take up too much space

    In his pristine house

    But seriously,

All I need is a couch

The only way I can ever be free

Is to have nothing left that matters to me

    I’m so stylish

    Holes in my jeans

    That I actually earned

    Super tight shirts

    Three years too short

    And safety pins

    Holding

     Me

    Together

The only way I can ever be free

Is to have nothing left that matters to me

    We are broken glass

    My brother

    Too good for this world

    And six sisters

Two who don’t know I exist

    Four I couldn’t exist without

    And my mother

    With too much passion

    For her almost enough life

That’s how I know I’ll never be free

There’s too damn much that matters to me

Thank you! My family definitely keeps me strong. Even the bad things bring us closer together.

I love this poem. Sometimes things are bad but in the end it's always great to remember there is plenty that matters to us.

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.

Aristotle (384 BC-322 BC) Greek philosopher.
