Poem Commentary

This is about a man playing poker. He feels he is going to lose, but he bets anyway. Then he sees a sudden change in the game, he might win. But somone beats him to it. What is he going to tell his children and wife?

Poker Face

His face is blank
It smells like smoke
I've bet it all,
and now,
I'm about to choke.

My wife, my kids,
they all believe in me,
but I just can't see
their crying faces once I've lost it all.

Oh man, Oh man.
i'm about to fall.

then he puts it out for all to see
My face starts pouring glee,
as I show my fate.
I've got it! I'm sure of it!

I lay it down to rest,
as i show my best.
I feel like a man.
then to my right,
he beats me to it,
my face changes
and now, I've lost it all again.

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
