Poem Commentary

This poem was a favourite performance piece when I used to do kids' shows it was also the final piece every night when i read and told my kids bedtime stories and would always end with my disappearance out of the room. The poem has strong rhytms that give it an incantatory feel in performance. I find the relationship between adult paranoia and childhood pleasure in being scared somewhat disconcerting.

Scary Monsters

In the dark, dark waters

under the deep, deep sea,

Scary monsters, with big, fat eyeballs,

Looking out for me.

Big, fat footprints dragging in the sand,

Big, fat footprints … but no-one is around;

Big, fat footprints, scary footprints …

Ssssh! … don’t make a sound.

There are monsters in the water,

There are monsters on the land,

Scaaarry monsters, haaairy monsters

Ssssh … don’t make a sound.

Quickly, look around!

There are monsters in the stairway!

There are monsters on the floor!

Monsters that will catch you and beat you and eat you and …

Chase you out the door!!!

Poetry is either something that lives like fire inside you or else it is nothing, an empty formalized bore around which pedants can endlessly drone their notes and explanations.
