Poem Commentary

Don't judge yourself by other people's standards. How can I be me if I am too distracted being who you want me to be??? Yeah...I can't.

Smashed Mirror

Smashed Mirror

I never needed your approval to know that I am a King.

I don’t need lavish dress to impress, money, or any thing.

The world’s opinion is dust on a scale, one feather from off a wing.

I can’t look at me through your mirror for the rest of my life.

I refuse to conform to norms of a fictitious world,

Where those who swore to protect it, they, their integrity, hurled.

Where sensibility stops, instead insanity is unfurled.

I can’t keep cleaning your mirror for the rest of my life.

Look please! Before you grab hold the tail of the asp!

And lovingly to your breast, the horrid creature, tightly clasp!

The third Fate it is; your line of life firmly in its grasp!

I must smash your mirror! Before it ends the rest of my life.

It takes some growing doesn't it, to get to a place where you value your own uniqueness? I have experienced the pressing mold of people's opinion, the self image of what I thought they wanted me to be. And I tried, with failure to conform. Thankfully I am blessed to keep on waking up. I have grown up and out of the masquerade for the most part. but I must argue, it's not the mirror that's the problem, its what we see in it.

Poetry is either something that lives like fire inside you or else it is nothing, an empty formalized bore around which pedants can endlessly drone their notes and explanations.
