Telephone Call

Poem Commentary

My long distance boyfriend and I just broke up. This is a song I wrote. The first verse is how he wanted me to come home to see him (I lived in Pennsylvania with him, but moved to Florida) We never knew when we'd see each other again. It was all how we promised to never break up. At night we'd put our phones on speaker and I’d hum to him. We were so young and innocent. When we first met, we were so silly together. We went to a concert together shortly after knowing each other (where I fell in love with him) when I had fallen a little further back in the crowd. He was up front when he grabbed my hand and pulled me up to the front with him. In that moment, everything went slow-mo and we locked eyes and everyone around him disappeared. In the end, I hurt him, of course. It basically ended up being a one-sided relationship, with my efforts being the only ones put into the relationship. I'm not sorry because I have found someone who treats me like the angel I am.

Telephone Call

Come back home
I'm so alone
This cigarette is burning out
You're alone
And it's unknown
When I'll be looking out for you
Get on that plane
Don't detain
This love for you it will not die

You and I
Heads on the pillow
Hum me a song
Of innocence
You and I
So warm and light
I won't give up at all
Its just a telephone call

When we first met
It was all fun and games
When we fell in love
It was you to blame
You grabbed my hand
Pulled me near
And our eyes locked
Everything disappeared

You and I
Heads on the pillow
Hum me a song
Of innocence
You and I
So warm and light
I won't give up at all
Its just a telephone call

And I know
I hurt you
Desert you
I know
I know
I gave up again
And I know
You're sorry
For being clueless
Oh I know
Oh I know
But I'm not sorry

You and I
Heads on the pillow
Hum me a song
Of innocence
It's all a lie
A silly lie
We weren't nearly as strong
As we thought
It was just a telephone call

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
