    The Forest

    The Forest

    I stand inside the forest
    In the safety of the brush;
    ‘Neath the shadows of the pine boughs,
    And the comfort is enough
    To keep me here not moving.
    And in the silent sounds
    The healing of my heart
    Is all that time allows.
    If I move too quickly
    The rustling of the leaves
    Breaks the quiet healing
    In the shadows of the trees.
    Sunlight whispers softly
    The words lost in the breeze
    But still it fails to get through
    The shadows holding me.
    I hear the world beyond me
    In the clearing at the edge
    My time is here for now
    And I live with no regrets.
    As I look out through the silence
    It’s music to my eyes;
    Time will offer me
    The chance to mend my life.
    The shadows of the forest
    Will wrap me in their care;
    Time will choose its time
    For the chances that I dare.

    Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
