    Poem Commentary

This is translated from Afrikaans in which I wrote it originally when I was 16 and we had to move because my dad got promoted and in that event got relocated. Goes without saying that we had to go along. I translated as best I could, and hope that I got the feeling of dreams and young love lost across. Some quirkiness and the rhyming got lost in translation, but I think it still beautiful. Maybe I'm just biased. Hope you enjoyed it.

    The News

    ''Daddy got the relocation
     - to me a shock and bad news.
Now we quickly have to pack and go.
I may not stay - may not choose...''

    Sadly I think back
    to the happy old days.
    We built it: a bridge.
    Now, both reluctant.

    We cycled together,
sat down in the park: exhausted.
Again I laughed at a joke.
    Oh, I pray...

We sat on the dam's wall
    and held hands.
    Got lost in our dreams,
    but now..!

    I laughted, embarresed, as he
    suddenly slid his fingers
    over my ironpen leg hair.
    That in my heart...that...murders..!

The next day when he came to fetch me
I was very sad and he tried to
cheer me up - my courage failing.
Had to tell him the news!

    He went milky pale
His eyes shocked and suddenly sad
     - all my courage lost.
With these words I told him again:

    ''Daddy got the relocation.
To me a shock and bad news.
Now we quickly have to pack and go.
I may not stay - may not choose.''

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
