    There we Were

There we were – little girls, you and I
Both shared a sadness we could not understand
I was five and you were nine –

Nose to nose, forehead to forehead,
arms wrapped around one another in that little twin bed –
    all we knew—
People said our daddy was dead

    What is that? I said
    You answered I don’t know
But I think it means –
We will see him no more

There we were – big girls, you and I
Both shared a sadness we could not understand
Many years older, you and I
Nose to nose, forehead to forehead,
arms wrapped around one another in that hospital bed –
    All we knew –
    You are leaving

    What is that? I said
    You answered I don’t know
But I think it means –
You will see me no more.

    Here I am – a big girl, just I

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
