There's Something Else

There's Something Else

I’m 29 and haven’t lived.

The world remains

largely unseen.

I move, I walk, dragging along,

My mind a daze,

Untouched by song.

My friend the dark

On jealous guard.

I wish, I pray, “reach out” I say…

And yet, the fear

I fear, has held me still…so very still.

I look upon this unconscious world

Like through a window

There…lies the unknown.

I’m not the same…

I feel a void,

Me barely, there…

No one to morn.

So much to do

For the adventurous,

So easy to reach out,

The center of yet another crowd,

Just dancing on without a cloud.

Oh! How I envy

how weightless is their stride,

The capture of their knowledge,

Their effortless allure…

While I gaze on their domain

My life just trying to endure.

Painfully aware of those…my flaws,

So wishing I could try again,

Flip a switch and be whole…

Without the shackles,

Without the stone,

Just one more charming

Unconscious soul.

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
