    Untitled

Deep as a chasm in the earth
    Widespread as the sea
Why can't people just acknowledge me
In times of need they come to me
But in my time of need who comforts me
I sit here and cry with tears in my eyes
As I realized it's always been like this
I'm rarely noticed until I'm needed
They flock to me like birds to seed
While I stand alone and bear my pain silently

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
