A Day Without Poetry

A Day Without Poetry

On a Sunday afternoon when millions
watched baseball; cheered football.
On a Sunday when millions more sat glued to their TVs
watching repeats, golf, and infomercials,
A poetry reading was held.
No one attended.

It was announced on various information boards.
It was posted in public places.
Hey, it was even listed on Craigslist.
Many said they would attend.
None did.

Is a poem a poem
if read in a forest and no one hears?
Does this rule still hold true
if read in a room with no chairs occupied?

Sometimes, I think poetry is a square peg
in a round-hole world.
Not enough action, maybe.
Maybe a poetry reading just doesn’t have enough flair.
Maybe it should be done in the nude?
Hmmmm, not a bad idea really.

Poetry is speaking to one's soul
in the language of the heart.
Sometimes I wonder if it’s not MTV enough
for today’s need for bling and flashing lights.

Whatever the reasons,
Poetry needs to read,
if only for the walls to hear.

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
