A HORSE WITH A FUTURE

A HORSE WITH A FUTURE

Here I go once again, down the dusty old road with my trailer hookded on to my truck, I'm headed to pick up another horse, that has ran out of hope and luck.
This horse is different than the other nine that roam on my land today
She is a 4 yr old Quarter horse, and was put on the tracks at two years old race.
She broke her leg as she stumbled down to the ground, with a bunch of people, from vets to owners, running to her side, trying to figure out if it was worth keeping her or putting her down.
The only thing that saved her life that day was the blood that ran through her her veins, they decided the blood line was strong enough for her to be used as a brood mare, so they fixed her leg and put her out to pasture to breed for others to carry on her name.
She never took with not one breeding, so to the race world, she had no reason to live, that's when a friend of mine called, that knew I would do exactly as I did.
When I drove up and went to the barn, and they opened up the stall door , and out walked that sorrel mare, she walked straight to me with a little limp, as if she knew why I was there.
She was perfect in my eyes, even with that little limp, and as they went to hand me her papers, I turned to them and said with a smile, they won't be needed anymore, and off the mare and I went.
Now what, I talk to myself the whole way home, for I knew the other nine were waiting, to see what that truck and trailer we bringing home.
Would they except her in the herd, and could she handle what would be dealt to her in this process she would have to go through, It is natural for them to show the pecking order that they desire for the new.
I decided to stall her for a few day, and get to know her and her know me, then a thought came to mind, that broke my heart to think,
that mare that I call Faith today, it was her day to be set free.
I said a prayer and talked softly to my four legged friends that stood on the other side of the fence, and then I opened the gate and took off the lead rope as Faith walked in to greet her new family and friends.
I work with these horses every day and I know each personality and their every way, and I couldn't believe what I was observing as they each greeted that old mare, that once had a broken leg.
They knew she was different than the rest of them, and were so gentle and so kind, not one kick, or bite or running her around , never crossed their mind.
As they run and play, she tags along and is never left behind, even if they have to stop and wait, until she catches up to lead the heard behind.
It is as if they know what she was bred to do, and they have given her back her pride, she has forgotten about the limp as she runs with her tail and head held up high.
She has brought such joy to each and every life on this ranch, and she has a special way of saying thanks in her own way, that she was giving another chance.

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion.
