A Poem For Ellie at 8

Frozen in feelings for a dog
    No. Two dogs
Each special to her in ways unique
Oh! The curly one, long legs and blonde
And the big brown one, a special pillow for her
These two tug at her heart
As she seeks balance in her life
She does not yet know how
The scale will tip for her
So she finds gold in the balance
    Her parents wait for when
Her wisdom and wonder and will
Steady her course toward gratitude and grace
The unbalanced platform sends her skyward
To soar, to play, to learn and love
It is love she does best
As natural as the blue in her eyes
It flows out like so many curls of her orange hair
Love for the two dogs, an easy chore
As she learns to love herself
While the scale tips this way and that
Like the tail of two dogs.
