Poem Commentary

This is about finding the love of my life again after nearly 30 years of being apart.

Across Time

Across time my heart is still that of a young man, feeling her warmth, her light that has never left me.  Now older, my heart beats the same as it once did.  Perhaps it is only memories of love and caring.  My heart tells me no, I feel it all too real.

Our time gave such sweetness of love, she lives in my heart through all these years now, always with me no matter where I journeyed, no matter what I thought or did.  She was with me, in a place safe, nurtured by my love for her. Kept there for ever never to be released but always felt.

Then one day, one moment my journey away from her ended, my eyes began to see, my heart began to match the light within, with the light it came from.  It was her light.  My long trek away was turned around, perhaps for only a moment to remember.

Feelings so strong they span my life. My heart screams to me to reach out to her once more, I remember, there she is, the beginning of my Love which all else in my life is measured and hoped to be as pure.  I have not found any like her in all the time of my life.  I realized I never will.

She is the one, the beginning of my Love that beats and holds me close.  My wandering life lost her.  If only I could take that time back, relive that time which gave sweetness of love once more and tell her what she meant to me.  I may never be able to, but in messages sent but never received.

I will hold her close inside my heart knowing she is there somewhere, somewhere out there but always here with me.  I Love her so.

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
