    An Abused Violin

If I was hymn and not me,
    I'd be more noticed instead
of being second chair to everyone
    around me.
I'd always be heard, from the opening
    note to the closing Amen.

I want so much to be hymn!
There are days when all I do is
rest inside my case, and yet I
    can hear the harmonious voices
of a choir or the flute play out all of the
    notes of the beloved songs.

I stay silent because I am not hymn
and my part is skipped over during a
shorter mass or when the musician who
plays me also plays a cello.
I am an abused violin. I am neglected
because there is so little I can do.
I don't have the ability to give all vocalists
and instrumentalists a sound or lyrics to
    brighten the congregation.

If only I could be hymn I might be able
to proclaim my love for God and for
music. I can only wish and then look
to the day when I am played with
    harmony once again.

A good poem and a good concept.. The "hymn and not me" starts in the first line, and was a little jarring to me at first. It toke a lot of mental processing to get it sorted out. Perhaps there is a way to buid to it rather than make the reader stop reading and process for awhile. Just a thought ... I liked it!

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
