    Poem Commentary

This poem I wrote for my friend, April, who broke up with her fiance just before they got married. It was sad because I thought they would always be together. I felt her pain and remembered how if feels to lose someone you love so much and felt I should write this for her. She read it, cried, smiled, and hugged me and said that was exactly how she felt.

    April’s Poem

    Bittersweet memories

Is all I’m taking with me.

I’ll say good-bye and try not to cry,

But the teardrops in my eyes

Make it so hard to see

    That you were the man

    I wanted for all Eternity.

    The pain in my heart

I feel sometimes is killing me.

I know that if I were to stay

They’d think that I was in the way.

There are things I left behind

That I’m sure you may not see.

Like the years we’ve been together,

Those were very special to me.

The foundation of our love is also there

    Wasting away into thin air.

The love we shared, there too, slowly fading away

Like the sunset on warm summer’s day.

Our memories we made together are now cast aside

Just  like bad photos that we’d just rather hide.

But most of all, part of my heart, sadly, is there somewhere

You may not believe it, but it’s true.

I’m sure you don’t know it or you can’t see it,

But it will always be with you.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
