    Poem Commentary

    The above poem is now and has been one of my all time favorites. I was innervated just to post it. Am wondering what various meanings or interpretations might arise from those who read it!?! Am hoping to get some feedback. Kallen

    As the Ruin Falls

    All this is flashy rhetoric about loving you.
    I never had a self-less thought since I was born.
    I am mercenary and self-seeking through and through;
    I want God, you, all friends, merely to serve my turn.

    Peace, re-assurance, pleasure, are the goals I seek,
    I cannot crawl one inch outside my proper skin;
    I talk of love....a scholar's parrot may talk Greek,
    but always end where I begin.

    Only that now you have taught me (but how late) my lack,
    I see the chasm; and everything you are was making my heart into a bridge by which I might get back
    From exile, and grown man. And now the bridge is breaking.

    For this I bless you as the ruin falls. The pains
    you give me are more precious than all other gains.

    One of my favorites as well. I have a copy of Lewis'poems and this still is my favorite.

    lightcourier, Now I understand why you used the conduit of my words to The Moon at Perigee to see the Someone behind it. Hail fellow Lewis cheerleader! Kallen

    When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
