Bullseye on Your Back

Bullseye on Your Back

I see you walking down the street so busy looking back

you’re tripping over pieces of your brain

the future died a lonely death with every piece that dropped away

and you’re so sure the next one’s here again

You never take the time to leave all that behind and see the man I really am

How can you say you hate me when you don’t even know me and we haven’t had the chance to meet again?

I swear I’m not insane

and if you’d take the blinders from your eyes

you’d know I don’t see you as another in a long line in my head

of women who have hurt me once they say they’ve loved me only to laugh and cry and mock my misery

so take another look and this time don’t turn away and I think you’ll see the man you really need

every man who loved you and then turned around and burnt you still makes you want to cry

it seems they still haunt you even as your ashes float upon the sky

just because at one time you had a bulls eye on your back

now your first reaction is to run

just this one time if you open up and put all that behind you

you’ll see I don’t hide any bullets in my gun

if I can find a reason to put my hate away and look out in the world again

I think that you can wake up and find that two way mirror in your head

time it passes slowly and sometimes it’s all we know

but I don’t think you’ve turned to dust just yet

I swear I’m not insane

I’m only living in this world away from all the shit cos the loves I’ve known are heading up the hill

with burning torches in their hands they say that I’m the monster who no one else could ever love

but the monster didn’t draw first drops of blood

So what am I to do just crawl up and die alone or forever hide out from the rain

I can’t even go outside without tripping over memories of how I slowly went insane

This one there and that one here whispering all the time

I’ve heard the lies so many times that the truth has slowly died

So if you want to see me for who I really am then try and open up your eyes

But first you’ll need to turn off the reruns in your head and maybe someday soon we can walk along

and neither one will ever trip again.

Believe me when I say I now know who I am

just walk right up and turn around and let me take that bulls eye of your back

And in return just wash away the dreams I cannot shed

and clear everyone who ever said they loved me from my head

I swear I’m not insane

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.
