    Chase

When I turn back to look behind,
I find myself standing midst mirages in a desert,
    I try to chase them,
But they get further away, to remind,
I can never catch them, as I can never become the same as I see myself in them.

Again I turn back to see in front of me,
I find myself in the same desert,
But this time, I see nothing, nothing to chase,
    I feel so blank,
Not even a ray of light I can find to make me go further,
To chase that I cannot see today, but it is there, it will always be,
I just need that light, which can follow me there, from where,
I will have no urge to look behind and see the mirages that I can never chase.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
