Closing The Distance

 

Side by side but we're miles apart

Speechless silence fills the void of conversation

My shushed mind doesn't know where to start

So we continue to sit in continued stagnation.

Changes in your resting position

Cause me to flinch at your sudden movement.

Euphoria overwhelms me! I give into its submission

We're no closer together but it sure is an improvement


 ...



My palm rests on the edge of my seat

And it shudders as it senses your hand nearing mine

But, our unification is never complete

And that itching urge to touch is, once again, left unsatisfied


...

I turn to face you and am greeted by a hurricane

Of butterflies swarming where my stomach does lie

Just that taunting glint in your eye drives me insane

I'm sure you can sense the stupid in my smile


 ...

Weeks pass; we gradually become more familiar

Were our chairs always pushed so close together?

Our words and feet start to mingle. Our intentions become clearer

But that comfortable gap remains present forever

 

I'm certain the distance betwixt us will close one day

Our palms shall become one and our lips will gently fuse

But for now I'll just slowly shift my seat and pray

That, in the end, it will be me that you choose

 To close that unbearable distance with
