Death & Darkness

Death & Darkness

Darkness settles around me,

I wish it would swallow me up.

It would feel better than pain,

The pain that is overwhelming me.

Hurt is all around

Pushing me down,

I feel that I will never get up,

The pain is overwhelming me.

Everything looks dead,

The planet is dead.

I will join the dead soon,

The pain is overwhelming me.

I want to be gone,

I don't feel like living.

Life is too painful,

And I am weak.

Is it wrong to want to die?

I think not,

Especially when you can offer nothing

To anyone around you.

I am empty

My body cries in pain

Death would be welcome,

Darkness would be lovely.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
