    Poem Commentary

Not long ago I was at a party with an old high school teacher of mine and we were drinking quite a bit and talking about poetry. I asked him to read a couple of mine to which he replied; "Another time, I wouldn't be able to concentrate enough right now." Then we both agreed that it was a good thing the same restriction of being drunk didn't apply to writing poetry.

    Drunk as a Poet

    Drunk as a poet
That's the term I like to use
    Gives rise to the thought
    That it's alright to abuse
    Substances that take us
    To altered states or planes
    Allowing us to be freed
    From the shackles and chains
    Of everyday existence
    Filled with sorrow or pain
    Now free to record
What is felt and or heard
    A free flowing conciousness
    Connected yet alone
    Narrating just outside us
    Looking down from above
A state of truth not yet seen
    Or, if ever; really known
    Coming alive on paper
From mind, to hand and pen

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

    Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
