Falling

The world rushes by as fragments of memories stab,
Feeling like swords of light forced through the cracks in your eyelids,
Falling downward into the cold darkness of an empty life,
Falling upward into the sun in an explosion of light and sound.

How long has it been since you opened your eyes?
A moment ago or a thousand years since?
Have you been haunted by his face for all this time?
Unable to find an escape, lose yourself in devotion.

Held together by a single thread,
Your lucidity pulls in all directions,
Longing to fly apart at a moment's notice,
You'd be gone but for the feel of his skin on yours.

Dancing all alone amid an endless field of ashes,
Looking up into an endless ocean of curious faces,
See him everywhere, in every face, in every curl of ash,
Starving to behold him, he is nowhere to be found.

Kaleidoscopic visions of a place that never existed,
A place you spent every day of your waking life,
Lean your aching back against the wall and rest your withered feet,
Fall back into a downy soft bed and his hands are on your face.

Pressing his lips to your forehead,
He leans back and becomes the monster of your walking dreams,
Mouth sewn shut, you scream with your eyes,
The monster seems concerned, makes soothing noises.

But you won't be swayed from the search,
Dive from the bed and tread those dark and tepid waters,
Something caresses your thighs with a cold slickness,
Use your forgotten wings and pull towards the skies.

Hidden there among celestial bodies,
A hideous pretension begins to unfurl,
Cradled there among lush scarlet petals,
Is the sun/Is the world/ Is a man.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
