Fly over country

Poem Commentary

I was on a flight from Denver to Hays, KS and looked out the window and saw the lights and thought, wow, there are people there.

Fly over country

I was on a cross country flight
heading to the coast
It was dark outside and late at night
I was looking out the window.

And I saw lights.

Some single, some small groups, some larger cities too
And I realized where each light was
Life was clinging to a thread.
An individual, a family, a town a city
All clinging to the light.

And they all have a story.
A beginning, a life lived, and an end coming.
Loves, losses, family, friends,
Hopes, dreams, dreads, hates, fears.

And I wondered, what are they thinking?
Feeling, fearing, wanting, needing?
Where have they been? What are they doing?
What have they done? Where are they going?

Do they look up and wonder the same about me on this plane?
